About C02 files

A .c02 file is a multi-purpose extension that creates significant confusion because it is shared by three completely different legacy and industrial software ecosystems.

The most common use (approx. 22%) is as a Digital Music Notebook file developed by Yamaha Corporation. These are secure, proprietary containers used to deliver digital sheet music, lyrics, and backing audio tracks.
The Problem: The Digital Music Notebook service has been discontinued. Because these files often contain the DMN Security Format (DRM), they are locked to the specific installation or hardware ID where they were purchased. Users frequently find themselves with a library of paid content they can no longer open, print, or play on modern versions of Windows or macOS. To salvage this content, the goal is often capturing the score to PDF or the backing track to MP3 via analog loopback methods before the legacy environment stops working entirely.

Alternatively, a .c02 file may be a texture analysis measurement file created by Exponent or similar software from Stable Micro Systems. These files contain raw rheology data - such as the force required to compress a cookie or the viscosity of a gel.
The Problem: This is binary engineering data. It cannot be opened in standard text editors or browsers. Researchers and QA engineers often struggle to share this data with colleagues who don't have the expensive analysis software installed. The best practice is converting these datasets to CSV or XLSX (Excel) to ensure the data remains accessible for statistical analysis.

Finally, the extension is occasionally seen as part of a split volume archive (e.g., archive.c02) created by the obsolete WinAce compression tool. These require all corresponding parts (.c00, .c01) to extract successfully.

Convert.Guru analyzes your C02 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted C01, CO2, B00, SCORE and OSD files.
