About BVS files

The .bvs file format is primarily used by the StormGeo Bon Voyage System to store maritime voyage optimization routes. These files contain detailed route plans, weather routing data, and waypoints utilized by ship captains and fleet managers in software like AROS Route Planner or Voyage Planning Station (VPS). A secondary, unrelated use of the .bvs extension is for saved game states in the BVS Solitaire Collection by BVS Development Corporation.

The main disadvantage of StormGeo .bvs files is their specialized nature. While the underlying structure is usually standard XML, the specific tags and routing syntax are proprietary to StormGeo. Opening them directly in standard navigation or GIS software often results in errors. Furthermore, BVS Solitaire saves are closed, proprietary files that are completely useless outside of the specific game engine.

Since the maritime .bvs files rely on an XML structure, the most practical conversion targets are generic text formats like XML and TXT, or tabular formats like CSV for data extraction. Direct conversion to consumer GPS formats like GPX or KML is difficult because the .bvs schema includes proprietary weather parameters that do not translate to standard mapping tools. Standard online converters fail to process .bvs files because they do not recognize the extension and cannot parse the specialized maritime data schema.

Because this file format is heavily tied to a proprietary ecosystem, it is notoriously difficult to open or convert correctly. Often, only the original StormGeo software can properly read or export the complex weather routing data. However, just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects the supported underlying XML format, viewing the raw text coordinates or converting the data into a readable format may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BVS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BVS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BVS converter.
