About BVR files
The .BVR extension predominantly refers to a proprietary video container created by Blue Iris security software. These files are optimized for "direct-to-disk" recording efficiency, allowing high-performance capture of surveillance footage. However, this optimization comes at the cost of compatibility; .BVR files cannot be opened by standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, nor can they be uploaded to YouTube or viewed in a web browser without conversion.
To make this footage usable for evidence sharing, archiving, or mobile viewing, users must convert .BVR files to standard formats like MP4 (H.264) or AVI. While the Blue Iris console offers built-in export tools, accessing them requires a licensed installation and the original hosting environment, creating a lock-in effect for external users.
Secondary Use Case (PCB Design): A significant portion of .BVR files are BoardView schematics used in electronics repair (e.g., with ZXW Tools or BoardViewer). These files contain CAD data for printed circuit boards (PCBs). They are strictly for technical viewing and are incompatible with video software. Repair technicians often need to convert these specific views to PDF or PNG images to create shareable repair manuals or documentation without requiring the recipient to install specialized board viewing software.

The BVR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BVR converter.
