About BUM files
A .bum file is a proprietary game asset container used primarily for storing 3D models, animations, and texture data in specific video game titles. It is most frequently associated with titles developed by Marvelous Inc. (such as Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life) and CyberConnect2 (known for the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series), though it also appears as a data bundle in games like Burnout Paradise.
A common frustration with .bum files is their lack of standardization; they are not designed for public editing and function as compiled binary archives locked to the specific game engine. Users typically encounter these files when attempting to mod games, extract character models, or rip textures. Because standard 3D software like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively parse the proprietary encoding, opening them directly is impossible without specialized unpacking tools. Furthermore, the internal structure varies significantly between game developers - a .bum from Harvest Moon is structurally different from one in Burnout, leading to "invalid file" errors if the wrong extraction method is used.
To make these assets usable, the pragmatic workflow is conversion. For editing 3D geometry, the best target format is OBJ (for static meshes) or FBX (if retaining skeletal rigs is necessary). If the file contains texture maps, converting the internal image data to PNG or TGA is essential for compatibility with modern image editors like Adobe Photoshop. While dedicated extraction scripts exist for specific games, they often require command-line usage; convert.guru simplifies this by helping identifying the specific file variant and processing the container into standard, editable formats.

If you want to convert BUM file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Unity or similar software from the "Game Asset Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to BUM, try Unity or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Storage" category.
The BUM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BUM converter.
