About BUG files

The .BUG extension is primarily associated with Bayesian inference Using Gibbs Sampling (BUGS) scripts. These text-based files contain statistical models written in the BUGS language, used by legacy software like WinBUGS and OpenBUGS. Users often need to convert these scripts to R or TXT to migrate their research to modern environments like RStudio or JAGS.

A secondary, distinct use is as a Cardiology Bug Report generated by Esaote CardioXP software. These are actually Compressed archives (ZIP files) containing system logs and error data. The practical constraint here is proprietary lock-in; users cannot open the report without sending it to support. However, because it is a ZIP container, you can often rename the extension to ZIP to inspect the logs manually.

Less commonly, the file may be a legacy character data file for Edmark Thinkin' Things or 3D Movie Maker. These are binary game assets and generally cannot be converted to standard formats without specific modding tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BUG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BUP files.

The BUG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BUG converter.
