Most commonly, a .BUC file is a Samsung Contact Backup created by older management suites like Samsung Kies or strictly for contact storage. While efficient for restoring data to a specific Samsung device, these files are effectively "black boxes" on a standard PC. Users typically encounter them when trying to migrate contacts to an iPhone, Outlook, or Google Contacts, only to find the file is unreadable by standard text editors. To make this data usable, the best workflow is converting the .BUC file to a standardized VCF (vCard) or CSV format, which allows for universal import across email clients and mobile operating systems.
Alternatively, a .BUC file may be a BuddyCAD Catalog database. Despite the niche extension, these are often structured as standard SQLite databases disguised with a custom suffix. Users working with legacy CAD data may find themselves unable to open these catalogs without the original BuddyCAD environment. In this scenario, renaming the extension to DB or SQLITE and using a generic database viewer - or converting the content to standard SQL dumps - is the most reliable way to salvage and inspect the cataloged component data.
