Convert a file to BTOA
To convert other file formats to the "UNIX Encoded Text" file type, you need software like UNIX Command Line or a similar tool.
About BTOA files
The .BTOA file format is a legacy text-based wrapper used to store binary data that has been encoded into printable ASCII characters. Originally developed for UNIX systems, this encoding method allowed binary files - such as executables or compressed archives - to be safely transmitted over early text-only networks, including email and Usenet, which would otherwise corrupt raw binary data.
To interact with these files natively, users typically rely on the command-line atob utility found in UNIX or Linux distributions. You can read more about its history on Wikipedia.
The primary disadvantage of the .BTOA format is its sheer obsolescence. It has been almost entirely replaced by standard Base64 MIME encoding. Modern graphical operating systems do not provide native support to open or decode these files, requiring users to drop into a command line or install niche extraction tools. Furthermore, encoding a binary file into ASCII increases the file size by approximately 25%, causing unnecessary bloat.
You do not "convert" a .BTOA file in the traditional sense; you must decode it to retrieve the original payload. The resulting target format depends entirely on what was originally encoded, often yielding a TAR, GZ, or raw binary executable.
Standard online converters usually fail to process .BTOA files because they are encoding wrappers, not standard media or document files. Standard tools look for image or document headers and fail when they only see ASCII text. If our analysis successfully identifies the hidden binary structure, decoding and extracting the contents may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BTOA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BTOA file to BASE64, HEX, BIN, ENC, CRYPT, AES, DES, RSA, PGP, GPG, ASC or KEY, you can use UNIX Command Line or similar software from the "Binary-to-ASCII Encoding" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert CER, BIN, PEM, DER, KEY, P7S, PFX, ENC, P12, BASE64, P7B or HEX files to BTOA, try UNIX Command Line or another comparable tool in the "Binary-to-ASCII Encoding" category.
The BTOA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BTOA converter.
