The .BRW file extension serves multiple distinct purposes, making it highly fragmented. Most commonly, it functions as a saved query and report file used by enterprise business intelligence systems like Oracle Business Intelligence Discoverer or ReportsNow Data Access Studio. Alternatively, industrial cameras manufactured by the Baumer Group use the .BRW format to store unprocessed, uncompressed sensor data (Baumer Raw Image File). It is also occasionally used as an image browse cache file by Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and legacy HP PhotoSmart software, or as a borrower data file in Calyx Point.
Because of this fragmentation, .BRW files are notoriously difficult to open. They are proprietary and closed-source. An enterprise database report cannot be opened with an image viewer, and a raw industrial camera image is completely unsupported by standard web browsers. Furthermore, Oracle reports often require expensive, active enterprise subscriptions to view the data.
Users frequently need to convert these files to make the data portable and accessible. For business reports, converting to CSV, XLSX, or PDF is ideal, though you will likely lose dynamic database connections and complex formulas. For camera files, converting to JPG or PNG allows you to view the image, but sacrifices the 16-bit raw color depth required for professional editing.
Standard online converters almost always fail to process .BRW files because they lack both the enterprise database drivers and the specialized camera SDKs needed to decode the data.
