The .blr extension primarily refers to the Biacore Result file, a proprietary format generated by Cytiva (formerly GE Healthcare) Biacore instruments. These files contain complex Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) data, including sensorgrams, kinetic interaction curves, and binding affinity metrics used in pharmaceutical research.
The main issue for researchers is that .blr files are based on the Microsoft Compound Document architecture but use a closed schema. This means they cannot be opened by standard tools like Microsoft Excel or generic text editors without resulting in garbled binary data. Users often find themselves locked out of their own experiment data once they leave the lab computer.
For analysis and publication, the standard workflow is to convert these files into XLSX (Excel) for number crunching, CSV for raw data processing, or PDF for static reporting. While direct third-party conversion is limited due to the proprietary encoding, the most reliable method is to use the "Export" function within the Biacore Insight Evaluation Software. For automotive users, a .blr file may alternatively be a Bosch ESI[tronic] license request file, which should never be renamed or converted as it is strictly for software activation keys.
