About BMG files
The .BMG file format is primarily utilized in Nintendo video games to store text strings, character dialogue, UI menus, and system messages. A secondary, entirely different use case is found in the photonics industry, where it functions as a laser beam analysis data file for the Gentec-EO PC-Beamage software.
For the gaming format, community-developed modding tools like Wexos's Toolbox or specific Python scripts are usually required to read or edit the files. They rely on undocumented binary encoding and often utilize an internal MESG magic header. For optical data, users are restricted to viewing the files in the official Gentec-EO PC-Beamage application.
The major disadvantage of the .BMG format is its strictly proprietary, closed ecosystem. Gamers, modders, and localization teams cannot open a .BMG file in a standard text editor. Doing so simply displays corrupted binary characters. Additionally, these files are often embedded inside compressed archives, requiring extraction before the text can even be reached.
Users typically need to convert Nintendo .BMG files to TXT, JSON, or XML to translate dialogue or build custom ROM hacks. Beamage users frequently need to export their optical readings to CSV for analysis in Microsoft Excel.
Because .BMG is a closed, highly specific format, standard online text converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software or specialized community scripts can properly read or export the exact data. However, you can drag and drop your file to convert.guru to see what it is and convert it if supported. Our platform can identify the file format, inspect the binary structure, and often extract embedded raw text directly in your browser.

The BMG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMG converter.
