Convert a file to BMG
To convert other file formats to the "Game Localization File" file type, you need software like Wiimms SZS Tools or a similar tool.
About BMG files
A .BMG file is most commonly a Nintendo Binary Message file, a proprietary format used to store game text, dialogue, and UI strings in titles like Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and The Legend of Zelda. These files compile human-readable text into a binary structure (often using INF1 and DAT1 sections) to optimize performance on consoles like the GameCube, Wii, and Wii U. The problem for modders and translators is that you cannot open a .BMG file in a standard text editor like Notepad; attempting to do so results in garbled data because the file often uses custom encodings (Shift-JIS, UTF-16) and binary control codes. To edit the text, you must convert the .BMG file to XML or TXT using specialized tools like Wiimms SZS Tools or BrawlCrate. Once converted to XML, the text can be modified and then re-compiled back into .BMG for use in the game.
Alternatively, in scientific and industrial settings, a .BMG file is a Beamage Data File created by Gentec-EO's PC-Beamage software. These files contain laser beam profile analysis data, including intensity distribution and diameter measurements. This format is strictly proprietary. To share this data or use it in reports, users typically need to export the information from the PC-Beamage software directly to CSV for Excel analysis, or to PDF, PNG, or JPG for presentation.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your BMG file.

The BMG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMG converter.
