About BACK files
A .back file is a generic backup file created by various software applications or operating systems to store a copy of original data. Because developers append ".back" to prevent accidental overwriting, the actual content could be anything from a SQLite database, an MP4 video from a Samsung Android device, or a compressed ZIP archive from agricultural software like Ag Leader SMS.
The primary disadvantage of a .back file is its lack of standard formatting. Operating systems do not know which application to use to open it. Standard converters fail because the extension does not declare the internal MIME type. Furthermore, proprietary app backups (like those from finance apps or music tablature software) require the original software to decode the proprietary schema. A user is completely blind to what is inside the file without a hex editor.
The best way to "convert" a .back file is often to identify its internal signature. For example, if it is a Samsung video backup, simply renaming the file extension to MP4 allows VLC Media Player to play it. If it is an Ag Leader SMS project, renaming it to ZIP allows extraction using WinZip.
Because .back files are heavily fragmented across different proprietary formats, they are extremely difficult to blindly convert. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like an SQLite database or GZIP stream, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BACK file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BACK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BACK converter.
