To convert other file formats to the "Musical Tablature File" file type, you need software like TablEdit or a similar tool.
About BJO files
A .BJO file is a specialized digital document used to store banjo tablature and musical scores. These files map out string fingering, timing, and musical notes specifically for banjo players. They are predominantly created and opened by the TablEdit tablature editor or the legacy TabRite software.
The .BJO format is highly proprietary and extremely niche. You cannot open it natively on standard operating systems, and web browsers do not support it. It requires specific software installs, often tied to a paid license or legacy applications that do not run on modern 64-bit systems. Sharing a .BJO file with a bandmate usually results in an 'unsupported file' error, creating unnecessary friction during rehearsals or collaborations.
To make these files usable, you must convert them. The best target formats are PDF for easy printing and universal sharing of the sheet music, MID (MIDI) for audio playback of the tablature, or TXT for basic ASCII tablature viewing. Converting to PDF flattens the file, meaning you lose audio playback and editing capabilities, but you gain guaranteed readability across all devices.
Because .BJO is a closed, proprietary format, standard online audio or document converters typically fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the structured musical data. However, convert.guru provides a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying ASCII structure or embedded MIDI data, viewing or conversion may still be possible without installing legacy software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BJO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BJO file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use TablEdit or similar software from the "Banjo Tablature Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to BJO, try TablEdit or another comparable tool in the "Banjo Tablature Storage" category.
The BJO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BJO converter.
