About BGX files

The .BGX extension refers to two distinct file types, creating frequent confusion. The most common (69%) is a Gene Expression Annotation file used by Illumina software (specifically GenomeStudio and the legacy BeadStudio). These files serve as manifests for microarray experiments, mapping probe IDs to gene symbols, chromosome positions, and ontology data. Users typically need to convert these into CSV or XLSX to analyze the data in standard tools like Microsoft Excel or RStudio. A common issue is that while many .BGX files are simply GZIP compressed text files, they don't carry the standard .gz extension, causing spreadsheet software to reject them.

The secondary use (7%) is a proprietary Game Data Archive found in older EA Sports titles (such as the F1 series). These function like ZIP files, storing textures, telemetry, and audio assets that modders want to extract. For these, standard conversion means extracting the internal contents to BMP, WAV, or DDS for editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BGX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MOM, TLX and IVC files.

The BGX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BGX converter.
