The .BFS file format is primarily used as a proprietary game data archive by Bugbear Entertainment for racing games like FlatOut and FlatOut 2. These files bundle game assets including 3D models, textures, audio tracks, and configuration scripts into a single container to optimize load times. A secondary use is for MaritzCX Survey Builder (now InMoment), where it acts as a portable Binary Serialized File containing survey design structures based on the NET framework.
The major disadvantage of the .BFS format is its closed, proprietary nature. You cannot open it with a standard unzipper like 7-Zip or WinRAR. It requires specialized community-built modding tools like BFS Unpacker or BFS2Pack to extract the contents. The MaritzCX variant is equally frustrating, requiring an active enterprise software license to open, effectively locking your survey data behind a proprietary wall.
Converting a .BFS file directly is impossible for standard online converters. For game files, you must extract the contents into usable targets like PNG images, WAV audio, or TXT configuration files.
