About BFF files

The .BFF extension primarily identifies Binary File Format archives used by the Madness Engine, the technology powering racing simulators like Project CARS 2 and Need for Speed: Shift. These files are monolithic containers that pack thousands of game assets - including DDS textures, XML data configurations, and audio streams - into a single file to optimize loading times.

For gamers and modders, the main challenge is that .BFF files are proprietary and cannot be opened with standard software like File Explorer or Photoshop. To edit a car livery or tweak physics, you must first "convert" the file by extracting its contents using specialized scripting tools like QuickBMS or the pCARS Renamer Tool. Once extracted, the internal DDS images can be converted to JPG or PNG for editing.

In enterprise IT, .BFF refers to the Backup File Format used by IBM AIX systems. These are installation images created by the backup or bffcreate commands, functioning similarly to TAR archives but requiring the AIX restore utility or specific cross-platform extractors to open. Additionally, some e-books created by the Mantano Bookari reader use this extension; these are simply renamed ZIP files that can be opened by changing the extension manually.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BFF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted UBFF, JPG, SIG, XREF, ABK, LIS and LPP files.

The BFF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BFF converter.
