About BES files

A .BES file primarily functions as an endpoint management task definition used by BigFix (formerly IBM BigFix, now HCL BigFix). Administrators use these files to deploy software patches, security updates, and configuration changes across enterprise networks. Alternatively, it may be a Japanese Braille document generated by the Braille Editing System, or a game asset file used by Bohemia Interactive Studio or Battlefield 2. To open BigFix .BES files, administrators use the BigFix Console, but since the files are written in standard XML, they can be inspected with code editors like Notepad++. Braille files require native BES embosser software, while game scripts require engine-specific tools. Users often try to convert these files to share configuration parameters with non-technical stakeholders or to migrate Braille documents to more accessible formats. The primary disadvantage of the .BES format is its heavily siloed nature. BigFix files contain complex, proprietary Relevance Language queries that are useless outside the BigFix ecosystem. Braille and game variants are closed binary formats. Without the expensive original software, opening these files normally results in an unreadable mess or requires an active subscription. The most common conversion targets for the BigFix variant are XML or TXT for simple code review. Braille files are occasionally converted to BRF (Braille Ready Format) if supported by the native editor. This file format is difficult to open or convert because the exact same extension is shared by wildly different, highly specialized software ecosystems. Standard online converters inevitably fail to process them properly. Often, only the original software can reliably read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We will inspect the file structure and show any hidden text or internal XML content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TBX, ILF and PROT files.

The BES Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BES converter.
