The .SZD file extension is primarily a Behavioral experiment data file generated by video tracking software like ANY-maze and EthoVision XT. These files store complex spatial tracking metrics, zone entries, and behavioral analytics from animal or human trials. In other instances, a .SZD file functions as a Compressed 3D laser scan created by FARO Scene software, or as a PLC program project file used by FlexSim and Flexem FStudio. The major disadvantage of the .SZD format is its heavily proprietary nature. These files act as closed containers requiring expensive, niche software licenses to open. For behavioral researchers, this locks raw trial data away from standard statistical tools. For 3D scanning professionals, .SZD files cannot be imported natively into common CAD or 3D modeling programs.
