About BAB files
The .BAB file extension is primarily a legacy data container generated by Varian (now Agilent) Cary UV-Vis spectrophotometers. These files store raw spectroscopic data, typically absorbance versus wavelength arrays, inside a proprietary binary structure. The main issue users face is that .BAB files are tightly coupled to the original Cary WinUV software suite. Without this specific instrument software, the data is essentially locked away, making it impossible to import directly into modern plotting tools like OriginLab or Microsoft Excel. Users frequently need to convert these files to universal text formats like CSV, TXT, or ASC to perform curve fitting, baseline correction, or publication-quality graphing.
In a completely different context, a .BAB file may be a renamed RAR archive used for digital comic books, or a backup file for "Business Account Book" software. If your file is significantly larger than a typical data log (e.g., several megabytes) and you suspect it contains images, it is likely a compressed archive. For scientific data, the best workflow is converting to CSV for analysis. For comics, converting to CBZ or PDF ensures compatibility with modern e-readers and tablets without manual renaming.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BAB converter.
