About AVD files
The .AVD extension represents two completely different file types, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them.
1. MAGIX Video Information File (Most Common)
If you found this file on your computer alongside other videos, it is likely a metadata sidecar file created by MAGIX Movie Edit Pro (now Video deluxe). These files contain scene detection data, thumbnails, and audio waveform information automatically generated when a video is imported.
- The Constraint: This file does not contain the actual video footage. It is merely a text/index reference (approx. few KB in size). You cannot convert this file to MP4 or AVI because the visual data is missing.
- The Solution: You must locate the original source video file (usually MOV, MTS, or AVI) that was in the same folder. If you deleted the source video hoping the .AVD saved it, the footage is lost.
2. Proprietary CCTV/DVR Video (Security Recordings)
Less commonly, .AVD is a proprietary video format used by specific security systems, police cruiser dashcams, and digital video recorders (DVRs).
- The Constraint: These files are encrypted or formatted to prevent tampering (e.g., for use as court evidence). Standard players like VLC Media Player will not play them.
- The Solution: You must use the proprietary player software provided by the hardware manufacturer (often included on the backup CD/USB). Use that player's "Export" or "Save As" function to convert the footage to a standard format like AVI or WMV. If no software is available, screen recording the playback is the only workaround.
