To convert other file formats to the "Textile Design Project File" file type, you need software like AVA CAD/CAM or a similar tool.
An .AVA4 file is a proprietary project file created by AVA CAD/CAM, a highly specialized macOS-based software suite. It is the industry standard format for textile, wallpaper, and floor covering design. To natively open and edit these files, you need a licensed version of the original AVA CAD/CAM software.
The biggest disadvantage of the .AVA4 format is its strict vendor lock-in. These files are not standard images; they contain complex multichannel color data, separation layers, repeating pattern logic, and vector elements tailored for industrial rotary and digital printing workflows. They are heavily proprietary and entirely incompatible with standard design tools like Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW without expensive plugins. Because the software is macOS-exclusive and carries a premium enterprise price tag, receiving an .AVA4 file on a Windows PC or without an active license is incredibly frustrating.
If you need to share a textile design with clients or external manufacturers, the file must be exported to standard formats. The best conversion targets are TIFF or PSD to preserve layers and high-resolution print data, or PDF and JPG for quick visual proofing. Note that converting out of .AVA4 will strip out the specialized repeating pattern logic and machine-specific production data.
