About MAV files
The .MAV file extension typically represents a DVR video file used by DigiCAP DVR systems, and is sometimes identified as a Mediatek Audio/Video file. These files store raw video and audio feeds recorded by digital video recorders for surveillance or broadcasting. In a much smaller percentage of cases, a .MAV file functions as an Access View File associated with Microsoft Access.
Users face significant challenges with .MAV files because the format is strictly proprietary. It requires specialized, often outdated, player software provided directly by the DVR manufacturer. The files do not play natively in modern web browsers or standard media players like VLC media player. Furthermore, the files are typically large and rely on undocumented container structures to prevent tampering.
To share or review these surveillance recordings on standard devices, users need to convert .MAV to common formats like MP4, AVI, or MKV. Converting to MP4 guarantees compatibility with modern browsers, mobile devices, and law enforcement software. However, some metadata, such as proprietary timestamps or camera overlay data, may be lost during the extraction process.
Because .MAV is a closed, proprietary format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert. Standard online converters usually fail to process the custom headers. Often, only the original DVR software or a standalone executable player exported directly with the footage can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MAV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The MAV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MAV converter.
