Extract text from AUF files
To convert your AUF file to another format, you need Audacity or other Audio software.
To convert other file formats to the "Project Data File" file type, you need software like Audacity or a similar tool.
The .AUF extension usually refers to legacy data files generated by Audacity (versions prior to 3.0). These are Audacity Summary Files found inside the _data folder of an old project.
The Problem: Users often find these files when trying to recover lost recordings and attempt to play them. However, .AUF files do not contain actual audio; they only store the visual waveform data to help Audacity load graphics faster. They are proprietary, useless on their own, and cannot be converted to MP3 or WAV directly. The actual audio is stored in accompanying AU files.
The Solution: To recover the audio, you must open the main AUP file in Audacity, which reassembles the scattered data. For modern workflows, Audacity now uses the single AUP3 database format to avoid this mess.
Secondary Uses:
1. AviUtl Filter Plugin: Used by the Japanese video editor AviUtl. These are essentially DLL files renamed to .auf. They add effects or functionality and cannot be converted to media formats.
2. Carlson Survey Data: A plain ASCII text format used by Carlson Software for point data. These typically contain coordinates (North, East, Elevation) and can be easily converted to CSV or XLSX for use in Microsoft Excel.
