About ATL files
The .ATL extension is most frequently associated with Artlantis, a standalone 3D rendering application developed by Abvent. These files function as XML-based project containers that store scene definitions - including camera angles, lighting setups, texture mapping, and heliodon settings - applied to 3D geometry imported from software like SketchUp or ArchiCAD. A significant secondary use (approx. 15%) is for SAP Data Services export files, which contain data flow logic in Actian's language.
For Artlantis users, the primary downside is proprietary lock-in; you generally cannot open an .ATL file in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or Blender without first processing it through Artlantis. Furthermore, because .ATL files are project files, they often reference external texture libraries. If you receive just the file without its associated media folder, textures will appear as missing (checkerboards). For SAP users, the file is plain text but unreadable to standard office apps.
Conversion Best Practices:
- For Visualization: To share the design with clients who lack 3D software, render the scene to JPG, PNG, or generate a PDF portfolio.
- For 3D Editing: To migrate the scene geometry back to other modelers, you must export from within Artlantis to OBJ or FBX.
- For SAP/Data Files: These are best converted to TXT or opened in a code editor like Notepad++ to inspect the script logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ATL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ATLO, PDF, ZIP, 3DS, MAX and RCS files.
The ATL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ATL converter.
