About ATE files

The .ATE file extension is most frequently associated with AutoTouch, a popular macro recording tool for iOS and Android devices. These files serve as automation script packages that store recorded touch inputs, gestures, and Lua code used to automate mobile tasks. Internally, an .ATE file is often a ZIP archive containing the main script (main.lua) and asset resources.

Users often need to convert these files to view or edit the code on a desktop environment, as AutoTouch is mobile-only. A common friction point is that while the container is a ZIP, the contents may be encrypted or compiled, preventing direct editing without the original app or a decryption tool. Simply renaming the extension from .ATE to ZIP allows users to inspect the file structure on Windows or macOS, though the code itself may remain obfuscated.
