The .ARO file extension serves three distinct purposes, making it notoriously difficult to open without specialized software. Primarily, it functions as an AFT Arrow Compressible Flow Model file created by AFT Arrow, an advanced engineering tool used to simulate gas and steam piping systems. These files store highly complex mathematical models, boundary conditions, and fluid property data. Alternatively, an .ARO file acts as a VPN Configuration file for the AustroVPN application, containing encrypted network routing rules and user authentication settings. In rare, legacy cases, it represents a SteelArrow Web Application file developed by Tomahawk Technologies.
The main disadvantage of the .ARO format is its strictly proprietary nature. Engineering models require expensive, specialized desktop software to view, while VPN configurations are tightly coupled to a single service provider. You cannot simply open a binary .ARO file in standard text editors or web browsers; doing so often displays unreadable characters or risks permanent data corruption. Because these are closed formats, standard online converters fail to process them.
