About AOI files
The .aoi extension is shared by three distinct ecosystems, creating frequent confusion. The most common variant is the Act! Synchronization Command file, generated by Act! CRM. These are technically XML text files used to log data transfers between remote databases. While critical for the software's backend, they are functionally useless to a human user outside of the Act! environment. You cannot "play" or "render" them; however, because they use standard XML formatting, you can view the raw data by converting or renaming them to TXT or XML.
In geospatial workflows, .aoi stands for Area of Interest. These files are created by ERDAS IMAGINE to define specific polygonal boundaries within satellite imagery. The catch here is interoperability: an .aoi file is often unreadable by standard mapping tools like Google Earth or ArcGIS Pro. To use these boundaries elsewhere, you typically need to convert them to KML, SHP (Shapefile), or DXF.
Finally, legacy 3D artists may encounter .aoi files as Scene files from Art of Illusion. These are proprietary Java-based project files. To move this content into modern tools like Blender or Unity, you must export the geometry to OBJ or STL.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AOI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted A2C, NSCE and SCENE files.
The AOI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AOI converter.
