About A2C files

The .A2C extension represents a legacy 3D asset format primarily associated with Alice, an educational programming environment developed by Carnegie Mellon University. These files, formally known as Alice Object Files, function as containers (often structured internally as ZIP archives) for 3D character models, props, and scene data used to teach object-oriented coding. Users often deal with issues with .A2C files because the Alice 2.x software is outdated, leaving modern users unable to view or edit these assets in standard tools like Blender or Maya.

Additionally, in professional architectural workflows, the extension is utilized as an Allplan CAD Exchange file by Nemetschek Allplan, serving as a bridge format for transferring BIM data between Nemetschek ecosystem tools (such as Allplan to Cinema 4D). A third, less common variant involves Autodesk Character Generator definitions or mislabeled Android Audio Cache data. Due to this proprietary lock-in, converting .A2C to universally accepted 3D formats like OBJ (for geometry), FBX (for rigged characters), or STL (for 3D printing) is essential for archiving, editing, and cross-platform compatibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your A2C file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The A2C Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our A2C converter.
