About ANX files

The .ANX file extension is primarily associated with HotDocs, a market-leading document automation platform. These files are essentially XML containers that store the "answers" - data entered by a user during a questionnaire interview - used to generate complex legal or insurance documents.

The biggest obstacle for users is that an .ANX file is not the final document (like a DOCX or PDF). It contains only the raw data (variables and values) without the accompanying formatting or template logic. If you double-click it without HotDocs installed, it may not open, or it might open as a confusing wall of code in a web browser. It is useless for printing or signing unless paired with its corresponding template file (HPT or CMP).

A secondary, less common use (approx. 16%) is for AWIPS (Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System) data used by the National Weather Service. These are specialized archives for meteorological data.
