Extract text from HFD files
To convert your HFD file to another format, you need HotDocs or other Text software.
To convert other file formats to the "Legacy Form Document" file type, you need software like HotDocs or a similar tool.
The .hfd file extension represents two distinct, specialized formats that often confuse users due to their proprietary nature.
Most commonly, an .HFD file is a HotDocs Form Document created by HotDocs (now part of CARET). These are not standard word processing documents; they are "Envoy-based" form documents used in legal and banking industries to assemble complex contracts.
The Problem: You cannot open these directly in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. They are legacy binary files designed to be viewed and filled only within the HotDocs Player or HotDocs Filler. Users often receive these from attorneys or legacy archives and find themselves locked out of the content.
The Solution:
Less frequently, .HFD refers to the healthdb.hfd file found in iOS backups. This is a SQLite database storing encrypted health data (steps, heart rate, sleep analysis) from the Apple Health app.
The Problem: This is a raw system database file, not a spreadsheet. You cannot double-click to view your health stats.
The Solution: Users wishing to analyze their data should convert this file to CSV or XLSX using a database viewer like DB Browser for SQLite or dedicated iPhone backup extractor tools.
