Convert a file to ANI
To convert other file formats to the "User Interface Resource" file type, you need software like Microsoft Windows or a similar tool.
About ANI files
The .ANI file extension primarily designates a Windows Animated Cursor, a system format used by Microsoft Windows to render moving mouse pointers (e.g., the spinning hourglass). Technically, it is a RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) container that wraps multiple ICO frames with sequencing data, defining the frame order and display duration (measured in 'jiffies' or 1/60th of a second).
While essential for Windows customization, .ANI files face significant compatibility hurdles outside that ecosystem. They are natively unsupported on macOS, Linux, and mobile operating systems, and modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) have deprecated or inconsistent support for using .ANI files in CSS cursor properties. This makes them effectively invisible for web design or cross-platform sharing. Additionally, specialized software like RealWorld Cursor Editor is often required just to view the internal frames.
To overcome these limitations, users should convert .ANI files based on their intent:
For Web & Social Sharing: Convert to GIF or APNG to preserve the animation in a universally supported format.
For Static Design: Convert specific frames to PNG or SVG for use in graphics software like Adobe Photoshop.
For System Compatibility: Convert to standard static CUR files if animation causes performance or compatibility issues.
*Note: Less commonly, .ANI may refer to animation data for the Valve Source Engine or project files for Vyond.* Just drag and drop to convert.guru to identify your specific format, view the animation sequence, and convert instantly.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your ANI file.
If you want to convert ANI file to CUR, MP4, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM or BAT, you can use Microsoft Windows or similar software from the "Animated System Cursor" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to ANI, try Microsoft Windows or another comparable tool in the "Animated System Cursor" category.
The ANI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANI converter.
