About ANI files
The .ANI file extension primarily represents a Windows Animated Cursor. Based on the RIFF framework, it stores a sequence of ICO frames used to display custom animations for the mouse pointer in Microsoft Windows. Other software, like Valve's Source Filmmaker and Vyond Studio, also use the .ANI extension to store proprietary 3D animation sequence data or video project files.
The classic .ANI cursor format is heavily outdated, proprietary to Windows, and not supported by modern web browsers, mobile devices, or macOS. It locks your visual assets into an obsolete system framework. If your file is a 3D animation project, it is often just raw data that cannot be opened without specific, sometimes expensive, software installations.
To make cursor animations usable on the web or across devices, convert .ANI to GIF, APNG, or WEBP. For extracting a single static icon, convert to PNG. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software on convert.guru.

The ANI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANI converter.
