About AMF files
The .AMF (Additive Manufacturing File) is an XML-based standard developed by ASTM International specifically for 3D printing. Unlike the older STL format, AMF was designed to describe the geometry, color, and material properties of an object in a single file, theoretically allowing for curved triangles and more precise meshes. However, despite being an official standard (ISO/ASTM 52915), .AMF faces significant friction in the real world. Because it is XML-based, files can become bloated and unwieldy compared to binary formats, making them slow to parse. Furthermore, widespread industry adoption has largely shifted toward the 3MF format, leaving many AMF files orphaned or incompatible with popular slicers and CAD tools like FreeCAD or Blender. Users often find themselves unable to send these files to their 3D printer due to lack of slicer support.
For practical fabrication, the best workflow is usually converting .AMF to STL (Stereolithography) for maximum compatibility with legacy slicers and 3D printers, or to 3MF for a modern, compressed workflow that retains color and material data. For editing the geometry in 3D modeling software, converting to OBJ is often the most reliable path. If you have encountered the rare .AMF music module (Asylum Music Format), these must be converted to MP3 or WAV to be playable on modern media players.

If you want to convert AMF file to STEP, DAE, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB or C4D, you can use Autodesk Netfabb or similar software from the "3D Printing Data Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to AMF, try Autodesk Netfabb or another comparable tool in the "3D Printing Data Exchange" category.
The AMF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AMF converter.
