The .AMF file is primarily an Additive Manufacturing File, an XML-based format standardized by ASTM International for 3D printing. It was designed to replace the older STL format by adding native support for color, materials, lattices, and constellations. Sometimes, these XML files are compressed into ZIP archives to save space. A smaller percentage of .AMF files are Asylum Music Format or Advanced Module Files, which are legacy tracker audio formats used by ORIGIN Systems for video game soundtracks.

Despite its technical superiority, .AMF suffers from poor industry adoption. Most budget 3D printers and older slicing software simply cannot read XML-based .AMF files. The best conversion targets for 3D printing are STL or 3MF. Converting to STL guarantees compatibility with almost any 3D slicer, but you will permanently lose all color, material, and internal structure data. Converting to 3MF preserves modern metadata.
