About CKB files

A .CKB file is typically either an audio voice bank created with the CRI Middleware ADX2 audio engine (used in video games) or a proprietary Character Kit Binary 3D miniature file exported by Hero Forge. Game developers use the audio variant to package compressed voice lines and sound effects, while tabletop gamers use the 3D variant to save custom character builds.

The .CKB format is highly proprietary and restrictive. The audio variant acts as a locked container for compressed audio cues, requiring specialized game modding tools to extract. The 3D variant is even more problematic: it does not contain standard 3D mesh data (like vertices and polygons). Instead, it acts as a list of instructions (sliders, part IDs, and paint colors) that only the Hero Forge server can interpret. This means it is impossible to open in standard 3D software like Blender or view in a web browser.

Users typically want to convert game audio .CKB files to WAV, MP3, or OGG for media playback. For tabletop miniatures, users seek to convert .CKB to STL or OBJ for 3D printing. Unfortunately, because the 3D files lack actual geometry, offline conversion to STL is impossible; you must use the official platform to render and export the mesh.

This is a closed, proprietary format. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the proprietary ADX2 decoders or the internal Hero Forge asset libraries required to generate a 3D mesh. If our analysis detects extractable underlying audio streams (like embedded HCA audio), partial conversion and extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CKB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MRB, BPC and EBX files.

The CKB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CKB converter.
