The .alpha file format is a specialized, obscure container primarily used to store raw transparency (alpha channel) data for raster graphics. Occasionally, it is also found as a plain-text Value Function File for POMDP AI solvers. In its graphics use case, it is associated with advanced editors like GIMP, but it remains highly impractical for daily use. The main disadvantage is that these files are essentially raw byte streams lacking standard image headers. This means your default OS viewers, web browsers, and standard photo apps will completely fail to open them.
You need to convert these files because .alpha is useless for client delivery or web publishing. The optimal target formats are PNG and TIFF. Both natively support transparency, ensuring your alpha channel data is perfectly preserved. Converting to JPG is an option, but be aware that JPEG completely lacks transparency support - any transparent areas will be flattened into a solid background color, resulting in permanent data loss.
Why is this file so notoriously difficult to convert? Because raw alpha bitmaps lack standard resolution and bit-depth metadata, generic image converters cannot decode the raw pixel grid. Often, only the original authoring software can accurately map the bytes back into a visible image.
