About AIS files
The .AIS file extension is a prime example of a multi-purpose format, representing several entirely unrelated data types depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it is an App Inventor screen source file used by platforms like MIT App Inventor and Kodular to save mobile application UI layouts. Alternatively, it can be a Jet Database file linked to the Microsoft Jet Database Engine, a plugin state file for ACID Pro, an image sequence for ACDSee, or even a proprietary save file for the PC game Alien: Isolation.
The main disadvantage of the .AIS format is its extreme ambiguity. Standard operating systems cannot guess the correct default program because the extension is overloaded. For instance, an .AIS file from App Inventor is actually a compressed ZIP archive under the hood, while an .AIS plugin state from ACID Pro is pure XML. If you do not have the original software installed, like a costly Microsoft Access subscription for JetDB files, your computer will completely fail to open it. Furthermore, proprietary binary variations (like the game saves) are locked down and unsupported by web browsers or generic text editors.
If you are trying to extract data, the best target formats depend on the file's origin. App Inventor .AIS files should be converted or renamed to ZIP to access the internal JSON and XML code. Jet Database .AIS files are best converted to CSV or SQL to preserve table structures, though complex macros and queries will be lost in the process.
This file format is difficult to open or convert precisely because generic tools look at the .AIS extension and guess incorrectly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru takes a different approach. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. By analyzing the internal file signature rather than just the extension, convert.guru can inspect the file and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a standard ZIP archive or Jet Database structure - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

If you want to convert AIS file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use MIT App Inventor or similar software from the "App Inventor Screen Source" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to AIS, try MIT App Inventor or another comparable tool in the "App Inventor Screen Source" category.
The AIS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AIS converter.
