About AFT files

The .AFT extension represents a frustrating filename collision between two completely different industries: genealogy and precision agriculture.

1. Ancestry Family Tree Database (Primary Use)

For most users, an .AFT file is a legacy database created by the discontinued Ancestry Family Tree desktop software (a predecessor to modern tools). These files are proprietary binary databases, meaning you cannot simply open them in a text editor or upload them directly to Ancestry.com or MyHeritage. The file contains your entire genealogical research - names, dates, and relationships - locked inside an obsolete format.

The Problem: Modern genealogy platforms require GEDCOM (.GED) files for import. Attempting to rename an .AFT file to GED will fail and may corrupt the data. To recover this data, you must use intermediate software like Ancestral Quest or an older version of Family Tree Maker to bridge the gap and export a standard GEDCOM file.

2. CLAAS AGRO-MAP Data (Secondary Use)

In the agricultural sector, .AFT files store yield mapping data generated by CLAAS combine harvesters and tractors running the AGRO-MAP system. These files log raw telemetry and harvest metrics used for precision farming.

The Solution: Farmers and agronomists typically need to convert these proprietary logs into Shapefiles (.SHP) or CSV for analysis in GIS software or standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel. This conversion usually requires CLAAS Telematics or specialized farm management software like Gatekeeper.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AFT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AVIF, PAGES, QZTP, WSS and STF files.

The AFT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AFT converter.
