About ADD files
An .ADD file is a highly fragmented file extension primarily used as an Advantage Data Dictionary for the Advantage Database Server. However, this extension is notoriously reused by multiple disjointed systems. It can serve as an address book in legacy IBM OS/2 or WordPerfect, a standard JetDB drill head definition in Alphacam CAM software, or even a vehicle diagnostic data file in Actia ActiDiag.
The main disadvantage of the .ADD format is severe vendor lock-in and a complete lack of standardization. Because dozens of different programs use the same .add extension for completely different binary or text structures, standard operating systems and generic file viewers cannot automatically recognize them. Users frequently face the frustrating limit of not being able to read their own legacy database contents without installing obsolete, expensive, or discontinued software. Furthermore, extracting data usually results in the loss of database relationships, macros, and index structures.
Users typically need to convert .ADD files to CSV, XML, or TXT to migrate contacts or database tables into modern spreadsheet software like Excel or a contemporary CRM. Standard online converters almost always fail to process these files because they cannot reliably guess which specific application created the file.
This file format is difficult to open or convert, and often only the original software can properly read or export the structured data. Our platform can inspect the binary header. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as Microsoft Compound, JetDB, or GZIP - viewing the internal content or extracting raw text may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ADD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ADD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ADD converter.
