To convert other file formats to the "Compiled COBOL Object File" file type, you need software like ACUCOBOL-GT or a similar tool.
A .acu file primarily functions as a compiled object file generated by the ACUCOBOL-GT compiler, a legacy COBOL development environment originally created by Acucorp. Less commonly, it serves as an AutoChart sonar log file created by Humminbird marine electronics, or a specialized financial data submission file used by the Ecuadorian Companies Superintendency.
These formats are strictly proprietary and highly specialized. The ACUCOBOL variant contains machine-readable compiled code, not human-readable text. It requires a specific runtime environment to execute and cannot be directly edited in a standard text editor. The Humminbird AutoChart log and financial submission formats are equally closed, locking data into specialized viewing software like AutoChart PC or ACU Report Viewer. Users face extreme difficulty trying to extract data from these files without expensive, specialized, or obsolete original software.
Standard online converters fail to process .acu files because they lack documented, open specifications. Converting a compiled COBOL object back to source code (CBL) requires specialized decompilation tools, which are rarely accurate. For sonar data, users typically want to export to CSV or GPX, while financial reports are best exported to PDF.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because often only the original software can properly read or export the data.
