The .ab3 file extension is primarily associated with G&A FotoAlbum, a legacy software tool used for organizing and presenting digital photo collections. These files function as photo album databases, storing the structure of an album - including captions, page layouts, and the sort order of images - rather than the actual pixel data of the photos themselves. A significant issue for users is that an .ab3 file is merely a catalog; if you copy this file to another computer without the original source images (e.g., .JPGs in a specific folder path), the album will open with empty placeholders.
A secondary but notable use of the extension is for PhotoImpact 3 Albums by Ulead (now Corel), a format from the late 90s used for similar organizational tasks. Because these formats are proprietary and obsolete, modern operating systems and web browsers cannot open them natively. To view the content today, the most practical solution is to locate a working installation of the original software and "Print to PDF" for archiving, or manually extract the source images if they are embedded. For sharing, converting the album layout to PDF is the industry standard, while the individual photos should be saved as JPG or PNG.
