Extract text from AATREND files

To convert other file formats to the "Historian Trend Configuration" file type, you need software like AVEVA Historian Client or a similar tool.
The .aatrend file is a specialized XML configuration format used by AVEVA (formerly Wonderware) Historian Client to save trend chart definitions. These files act as blueprints for industrial process visualization, storing the list of sensor tags, time duration (e.g., "Last 8 Hours"), line colors, and scaling preferences.
A common limitation for engineers is assuming the .aatrend file contains the actual historical data values. In reality, it only contains the query instructions. To view the chart as intended, you typically need the paid AVEVA Historian Client software and an active network connection to the Historian server where the data resides. If you try to open this file on a PC without the client or off-network, it will fail to render the graph. Additionally, because it is a proprietary setup file, standard tools like Microsoft Excel cannot open it directly to show a table of values.
However, because the internal structure is 98% XML, you can convert or rename the file to XML or TXT to recover the configuration data. This allows you to parse the tag names and settings using any text editor, which is essential for migrating configurations or documenting system setups without requiring a Historian license.
