About A64 files

The .a64 file extension primarily represents two entirely distinct legacy formats: a Nintendo 64 Memory Export or an Artist 64 Image. The Nintendo 64 memory variant contains raw "mempak" controller save data, which is hex-encoded into plain text to be read by older N64 emulators like Project64. Conversely, the Artist 64 Image is a proprietary, 8-bit raster graphics format created for the Commodore 64.

Relying on .a64 files today presents significant hurdles. The format is heavily fragmented and effectively obsolete. If you have an Artist 64 image, modern operating systems and web browsers have no built-in decoders to display its specialized 8-bit color palette. Meanwhile, the N64 memory format is an archaic workaround from early emulation days, tying your game progress to outdated PC driver interfaces like the Adaptoid. Because of these hard limitations, users must convert .a64 graphics to universal web standards like PNG or JPG to share their retro pixel art, while memory exports often need to be migrated into modern MPK or EEP save files for active emulators.

Converting .a64 files is notoriously difficult because standard online converters cannot differentiate between the text-based N64 data and the binary Commodore 64 image format. Most tools lack the obscure internal libraries required to decode either structure. Often, you must rely on specialized legacy software like XnView to render the graphics or the original emulator plugins to inject the text into a real save file. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible using convert.guru. Our system will inspect the file to show underlying text strings or embedded content, helping you determine exactly what type of retro data you possess.

The A64 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our A64 converter.
