About A2L files
The .a2l file is an ASAP2 (ASAM MCD-2 MC) description file, essentially acting as a 'treasure map' for the internal memory of an automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU). These text-based files define measurement variables, calibration parameters, and conversion rules (compu-methods) that allow external tools to interpret the raw binary data inside an ECU. While .a2l files are standard in the automotive industry for tools like Vector CANape and ETAS INCA, they present significant hurdles for casual users. They are often massive, nested text files that can crash standard text editors like Notepad, and their hierarchical structure is difficult for humans to parse manually. Because they are strictly meta-data, they do not contain the actual calibration values (stored in HEX or S19 files), which often confuses users looking for data. To make the contents accessible without an expensive toolchain license, users often convert .a2l to CSV or XLSX to audit parameter lists in Microsoft Excel, or to JSON/XML for integration with custom Python scripts and web dashboards.
Convert.Guru analyzes your A2L file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert A2L file to XML, DBC, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES or SAT, you can use Vector CANape or similar software from the "ECU Calibration Description" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to A2L, try Vector CANape or another comparable tool in the "ECU Calibration Description" category.
The A2L Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our A2L converter.
