About 4DL files
The .4DL file extension represents a 4th Dimension Database Log File. It is a transaction log generated by the 4D relational database management system, a platform popular for developing business applications. This file continuously records every modification made to the database, acting as a write-ahead log (WAL) to ensure data can be recovered or rolled back in the event of a server crash or power failure.
Opening and managing .4DL files natively requires the 4D Server software, specifically utilizing its Maintenance and Security Center (MSC) module. 4th Dimension is a specialized, commercial environment, which creates a significant barrier for users who simply need to audit or read the log data. The format is highly proprietary and partially binary, meaning it cannot be natively opened by web browsers, nor can it be cleanly read by standard text editors. Users typically want to convert or extract data from .4DL files to standard formats like CSV, TXT, or XML to perform compliance audits, debug database transactions, or import the event history into a third-party analytics tool.
Because .4DL is a closed, proprietary format heavily dependent on its parent database schema, standard online converters universally fail to process it. The data structure is meaningless without the corresponding 4DD (Data) and 4DB (Structure) files. Our platform will parse the file's internal structure; if our analysis detects supported underlying text strings or embedded readable data, we can extract it, allowing you to inspect the log contents without needing an expensive database license.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 4DL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert 4DL file to L, DB, SQLITE, SQLITE3, MDB, ACCDB, DBF, ODB, FDB, GDB, MYD or FRM, you can use 4D or similar software from the "Database Transaction Logging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert NDF, SQLITE3, BAK, RDB, SQL, DB4, MDF, MDB, LDF, DB, DB3 or SQLITE files to 4DL, try 4D or another comparable tool in the "Database Transaction Logging" category.
The 4DL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 4DL converter.
