About 3DV files
Most users encountering a .3dv file are dealing with a Medical Visualization Preset generated by i-CAT Vision, a software widely used in dental CT scans. Crucially, this file often does not contain the actual X-ray image. Instead, it is a lightweight XML file that stores display settings - such as brightness, contrast, and rotation angles - referencing the heavy DICOM or CAT data stored elsewhere in the folder. A major source of friction is users attempting to "open" this file to see patient scans, only to find it blank or unreadable because the actual image data is missing or separated.
Alternatively, in engineering sectors, a .3dv may be a Shipbuilding 3D Model (SPD format) or a legacy VRML World file. These are true 3D geometry files containing vector shapes and textures. These proprietary formats are notorious for being incompatible with standard CAD tools like AutoCAD. For the medical variant, the best pragmatic "conversion" is opening the file in Notepad to view the text data. For the 3D geometry variants, visualization requires specialized enterprise viewers like KISTERS 3DViewStation, with a goal of converting to standard exchange formats like STEP (for engineering) or OBJ (for graphics).
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ZIP, GEO, TCW and VRL files.
The 3DV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DV converter.
