About 3DO files

The .3do file extension is highly fragmented and serves as a container for 3D model data across several completely unrelated software ecosystems. Historically, it was used by Papyrus Racing Games for NASCAR titles, by LucasArts for the Sith Engine (used in Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II), and by the Panasonic 3DO console. Today, it is more commonly associated with BRL-CAD for solid modeling and Planmeca Romexis for storing dental 3D imaging data (which is actually a disguised ZIP archive).

Because these formats are highly proprietary and tied to legacy game engines or expensive medical software, they are notoriously difficult to work with. Users usually need to convert .3do files to standard formats like OBJ, FBX, or STL to use them in modern 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya. The primary disadvantage of a .3do file is its complete lack of interoperability. Game-specific versions require niche, community-built extraction tools, while medical versions are locked inside proprietary viewers. Standard online converters almost always fail to process these files because they cannot guess which specific .3do variant is being uploaded. While these closed formats are difficult to open natively, our analysis engine can often extract the underlying data. For example, if your .3do file is a Planmeca dental scan, our system immediately detects the embedded ZIP structure and can extract the internal imaging assets directly in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GMAX, OBV and GUP files.

The 3DO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DO converter.
