Convert a file to ZML
To convert other file formats to the "XML Archive" file type, you need software like GS-Zeugnis or a similar tool.
About ZML files
The .zml file extension generally serves two distinct purposes, creating confusion for users trying to open one. First, it is widely used as a Zipped Markup Language archive, which is essentially a standard XML file compressed using ZIP algorithms to save space. These are often used by applications like ZModeler or as renamed email attachments by security software (like ZoneAlarm) to neutralize potential threats. Users typically cannot open these directly without renaming them or using specific decompression tools.
Second, in the education sector, a .zml file is a proprietary data file created by GS-Zeugnis (GrundSchulSoftware Jansen), used for storing German primary school report card data. These files contain structured student information and grades that are unreadable outside the GS-Zeugnis environment.
Practical Workaround: If your file is a compressed archive, the quickest fix is often renaming the extension from .zml to zip to extract the inner content. For valid conversion targets:
For Editing/Data: Extract the inner XML file or convert the data to JSON or CSV for use in Microsoft Excel.
For Archiving/Viewing: Convert the interpreted data or the printable report card to PDF.
For Recovery: If the file was renamed by an antivirus, reverting the extension (e.g., to EXE or DOCX) restores the original file.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZML file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZML file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use GS-Zeugnis or similar software from the "Compressed XML Data Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to ZML, try GS-Zeugnis or another comparable tool in the "Compressed XML Data Archive" category.
The ZML Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZML converter.
