About ZIN files

A .ZIN file is primarily associated with Keyence VR Series 3D measurement systems, serving as a proprietary project container that stores high-precision 3D surface scans, optical imagery, and measurement data. These files are generated by wide-area 3D measurement systems used in engineering and quality control to analyze surface roughness and topography.

To open these files natively, users require the Keyence VR-Series Analyzer software. Alternatively, in the field of microscopy, .ZIN files can also be generated by ZEISS ZEN Core, representing specific microscopic image datasets or experiment settings.

The main limitation for users is the strict proprietary lock-in. A .ZIN file is not a standard 3D model or simple image; it contains complex metadata regarding height, roughness, and profile measurements that standard CAD tools (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD) cannot interpret directly. Users often find themselves unable to share measurement results with clients or colleagues who lack the specific Keyence viewer.

To make this data usable, the best workflow is converting the raw measurement data. For engineering analysis, converting the height map to CSV or TXT allows import into Excel or MATLAB. For reverse engineering or 3D visualization, converting the topology to STL or PLY is essential. Finally, exporting visual reports to PDF ensures clients can view the data without specialized tools.

Because .ZIN is a closed, proprietary archive, standard online converters completely fail to read the complex point cloud data inside. Often, only the original metrology software can properly read or export the geometric data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported; if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZIN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ZIN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZIN converter.
