About ZEI files

The .ZEI file extension represents multiple proprietary 2D CAD drawing and machine instruction formats. Primarily, it is used as a CAD drawing file by GLASER ISBCAD and TRIGA CAD software. In the manufacturing sector, .ZEI files are also utilized as glass cutting instruction files for HEGLA glass processing machinery and Zünd Cut Center systems. The name is often derived from the German word 'Zeichnungseditor', which translates to Drawing Editor. The main disadvantage of the .ZEI format is its severe lack of interoperability. These files are highly proprietary, closed-source, and tightly locked into specific industrial workflows. You cannot open them natively in standard CAD software like AutoCAD without specialized import plugins or the original authoring software. Furthermore, a .ZEI file from GLASER is architecturally completely different from a .ZEI file used by HEGLA machinery, leading to massive confusion and failed conversions. To share these designs or machine instructions, you must convert the .ZEI file into standard formats. The best conversion targets are DXF or DWG for further CAD editing, or PDF for simple viewing and client approval. Be aware that converting proprietary machine instruction files to standard CAD formats usually strips out machine-specific parameters like tool paths, cut speeds, or drill depths, leaving only the basic vector geometry. Because .ZEI files from TRIGA CAD rely on the legacy Microsoft Compound File format, and others are heavily encoded binaries, standard online converters fail to process them.
