About Z6 files
A .Z6 file is a compiled interactive fiction game file designed for Version 6 of the Z-machine virtual environment, originally developed by Infocom. Version 6 was specifically created in the late 1980s to handle graphical text adventures like Zork Zero and Shogun, combining traditional text parsing with on-screen graphics.
To open or play these files natively, you cannot use standard media players. You need a specialized Z-machine interpreter such as Frotz, Gargoyle, or web-based emulators like Parchment.
You cannot simply open a .Z6 file in a text editor to read the story. The text inside is heavily compressed using a proprietary 5-bit encoding scheme (Z-characters) and compiled alongside game logic bytecode. Standard document editors will only display corrupted, unreadable characters. This makes the format extremely frustrating for users attempting to extract game transcripts, reading material, or source code.
"Converting" a .Z6 file typically means disassembling the compiled game code to a TXT file to analyze the game's logic or read the embedded dictionary strings. This is best done using reverse-engineering tools like txd (part of the Z-tools suite), which translates the bytecode back into human-readable assembly instructions and text.
Because .Z6 is a closed, proprietary bytecode format intended for a specific virtual machine, standard online file converters fail completely when attempting to process it. They do not know how to decode Z-characters. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your Z6 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The Z6 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our Z6 converter.
