About XYW files

The .xyw file extension represents a proprietary XyWrite for Windows Document, originally developed by The Technology Group in the 1990s. This legacy word processing format stores typed text alongside specific styling codes, margins, and layout instructions. The primary disadvantage of the .xyw format is extreme obsolescence. Because it is a closed, proprietary format, it is entirely unsupported by modern applications like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or modern web browsers. Storing data in this format guarantees accessibility issues, as the original software requires obsolete legacy environments to execute. Users must convert these files to rescue and preserve historical data. The most pragmatic conversion targets are .TXT for plain text recovery, or .RTF and .DOCX if using specialized legacy migration software.
