About XVC files
An .XVC file is predominantly an Xbox Virtual Container, a highly specialized binary package used by the Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK) to bundle, encrypt, and distribute games for Xbox consoles. Think of it as a proprietary virtual hard drive that the console mounts to read game assets. On Windows PCs, these are commonly encountered as .MSIXVC files. Alternatively, an .XVC file might be a Verge Compiled Game Code file created by the VERGE role-playing game engine, or an OmniMark Virtual Machine Code file.
The main disadvantage of the .XVC format is its closed, encrypted nature. Files generated by Microsoft's MakePkg.exe tool are frequently locked with developer test keys or randomized keys prior to store submission. This means they are utterly inaccessible without the correct EKB license file. They are explicitly designed to prevent unauthorized extraction, making them impossible to open with standard archiving software. In the case of VERGE or OmniMark .XVC files, the data is already compiled into binary, meaning the original human-readable source code is permanently stripped away.
Because of these heavy restrictions, directly converting an .XVC file to a standard ISO or extracting its internal assets is rarely possible without official developer credentials and the original decryption keys. Our platform will inspect the binary headers to confirm exactly which type of .XVC file you have. While we cannot magically decrypt a locked Xbox container, we can extract embedded plaintext metadata, analyze the file signature, and help you understand a format that standard tools completely ignore.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XVC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XVC file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use Xbox GDK or similar software from the "Game Packaging & Compiled Scripts" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to XVC, try Xbox GDK or another comparable tool in the "Game Packaging & Compiled Scripts" category.
The XVC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XVC converter.
